Give our Babies The Best Start in Life.
Tamba is urging all members to get behind a new campaign to change a Government proposal which discriminates against multiples.
The Give our Babies the Best Start in Life campaign highlights the inequality in a new pregnancy grant which will benefit expectant mothers.
The Government’s Health & Social Care Bill 2007 includes the proposal for a £190 grant which will be available to all expectant mums. The Health in Pregnancy Grant will be available to every woman from the 25th week of pregnancy once they have received appropriate health advice from a health professional.
Research shows that good nutrition in multiple birth pregnancies is really important and Tamba is asking the Government to pay per expectant child rather than per pregnancy as this will help to ensure multiple birth babies have the greatest chance of survival.
Keith Reed, Tamba’s chief executive, said: “We welcome the proposal in the Health and Social Care Bill 2007 to pay a pregnancy grant to expectant mothers.
“This will be of real benefit to multiple birth families which experience considerable financial pressure during the first twelve months of their children’s lives.
“Nevertheless, compared to singleton pregnancies, multiple birth pregnancies have additional nutritional requirements and the additional costs of achieving healthy weight gain must be addressed in the Bill.
“We propose that the grant be paid per expectant child rather than per pregnancy as this will help to ensure multiple birth babies have the greatest chance of survival.
“Furthermore, weight gain needs to be achieved as early as possible in multiple birth pregnancies and consideration should therefore be given to paying the grant at an earlier stage.”
Tamba is asking all members to get behind its campaign by filling in and returning the campaign postcard attached with TT&M.

Child tax credit campaign - a fair deal for multiple birth families
The 'baby tax element' is only payable once regardless of how many babies you have in one year - families of twins are missing out on £545 and families with triplets or more over £1000. Is this unfair?
YES IT IS !!
Tamba have teamed up with www.twinsclub.co.uk to help fight against this discrimination.
On Saturday 20th March, a Tamba delegation presented the case for a reform to Child Tax Credit to Tony Blair. A petition of 5000 signatures was handed in to Number 10 Downing Street.
